FAQ

  1. When can I apply? When can I hear back about acceptance into the workshop?
    • The application will be available late October with a December 1st deadline. Decisions will be made and sent out by December 20th.
  2. Is there an application fee?
    • No, this workshop is entirely free. Travel costs will be covered through a generous gift from Google.
  3. When are the events scheduled to happen?
    • Please refer to the Schedule page for event information. We will update the calendar throughout the workshop so be sure to check in for updates.
  4. Will there be transportation provided to and from UCSD?
    • Yes, all travel/food expenses will be covered by the workshop.
  5. What are the benefits of participating in this workshop?
    • Participating in this workshop will give students CS research experience and an opportunity to present it. Students will also have opportunities to form connections with UC San Diego students and faculty. Furthermore, as this workshop is funded by Google, students will have the opportunity to network with a Google researcher.
  6. Will participating in this workshop increase my chances of being admitted to UC San Diego?
    • Admission to UC San Diego is a complex process. While we cannot guarantee that participating in this workshop will increase your chances of being admitted to UC San Diego, your participation in experiences such as this workshop shows initiative, which is often viewed favorably in a college application. Furthermore, participation in this workshop will help introduce you to all that UC San Diego has to offer.
  7. I cannot make one of the scheduled events (Research Open House/Presentation), should I still apply?
    • These events are highly recommended and integral to the workshop and your experience. If you are unable to commit to attending the events due to other commitments/responsibilities, please contact us to discuss potential accommodations.
  8. I have not taken a CS/IT course, but I am interested in applying.
    • Students who apply should either have completed or be currently enrolled in an introductory CS/IT course (e.g. Intro to programming, information fluency, information systems, etc.) at their community college.
  9. I do not identify as female, can I still apply to this workshop?
    • This workshop is designed specifically to increase the participation of women and non-binary students in computer science research, but all community college students may apply.
